The research unit Histories, Memories and Fictions, based in the School of European Studies at Cardiff University, established the journal in 1995 to publish selected research seminar papers presented by scholars visiting the unit. In 2000, the journal moved on-line for increased circulation. Previous themed issues have been 'Images of Exile’, 'Figures of the Self', 'Identity, Gender, Politics', 'Space and Identity', ‘Travelling the Urban Space’, ‘Writing Difference’, ‘Alternative Voices in European Cinema’, ‘Self and Other’ and ‘Truth Claims in Film’.
In 2010/11 Tilmann Altenberg led the relaunch and transition of New Readings to the journal management and publishing system OJS. This process was completed in May 2011 with the digitisation of the print issues vol. 1 (1995) – vol. 4 (1998), which are now also available as part of the online archive.
