Author Guidelines

Submission of a manuscript to New Readings will be taken to mean that it represents original work not previously published and that it is not being considered elsewhere for publication.

Solicited and contributed manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with the conventions of MLA style, as specified in MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (7th edition, 2009) or MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing (3rd edition, 2008).

The recommended word-count for submissions is 6,000-8,000 (including footnotes and Works Cited).

Note in particular the following:

  • All referencing should be parenthetical.
  • All referenced sources should appear in a list of Works Cited at the end of the article.
  • All notes should appear at the bottom of the page (footnotes).
  • Notes should be used scarcely and only to provide comment, explanation, or information that the text cannot accommodate.
  • Contrary to MLA's recommendation, when omitting text from a quotation the corresponding ellipsis should be surrounded by square brackets to distinguish it from an ellipsis that is part of the quoted text; e.g. [...].
  • All quotations in a language other than that of the article's main text should also be provided in translation in the main language (in square brackets directly following the quotation). Where possible, a published translation should be used.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor). This includes work previously published in a different language.

  2. The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.

  3. The text has a line spacing of 1.5; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and any illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.

  4. The text adheres to the requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which are found above.

  5. If the submission is not written in English, the subject matter explored justifies the choice of one of the following languages:

    • French
    • German
    • Italian
    • Spanish
    • Portuguese
  6. The copyright of illustrations has been acknowledged and the permission for reproduction obtained, or at the time of submission reasonable efforts have been made to locate and contact the copyright holders to obtain such permission.

  7. The instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
